Reading Comics in Windows Phone 7 with Graphic.ly using DeepZoom

Everyone likes reading Comic books. How about reading them on the move on your Windows Phone 7?

WPcomics1

Silverlight on Windows Phone also supports DeepZoom thus enabling great navigation and content viewing experiences. It delivers a high res imagery on low bandwidth. It starts with low res and scales in and as user starts panning and zooming in and out, it pulls down the right res. This is very important for phone devices.

At MIX10 Scott Guthrie’s Keynote, Mike Swanson demos Graphic.ly which provides Hi-fidelity Comics reading experience using DeepZoom on Windows Phone.

And there’s some behind the scene info about Mike delivering this session. Actually this session was to be done by Ben Riga but unfortunately, when he was on stage practicing the day before the keynote, he tripped and fell and broke his nose. So at the last minute, Mike Swanson had to step in and did this session.

Check out this Marvel Comics DeepZoom demo on Windows Phone and enjoy !

This session is a part of MIX10 Keynote by Scott Guthrie.

Nike’s Jordan Brand Social Mosaic uses Silverlight , Windows Azure Cloud Service

Jordan Brand, a division of Nike, is celebrating its 25year anniversary and has created a Stunning Mosaic called Mosaic 23/25 also known as Social Mosaic. It allows enthusiasts to connect with the Jordan Brand by allowing them to upload photos of themselves with their Air Jordan shoes. And all these photos containing thousands of images form a mosaic.

jordonmosaicz

“Powered by Silverlight 3, the Social Mosaic leverages both Deep Zoom, which provides the ability to interactively view high-resolution images, and Multitouch capabilities. Once the consumer uploads their photo(s), they are sent a photo ID so that they can visit the mosaic to find their photo.  Silverlight Deep Zoom allows the consumer to pan and zoom deep into the mosaic to see their picture and experience their own contribution to the Jordan Brand community. With Multitouch, they can interact with the mosaic through touch screen functionality, if supported by their hardware, to further enhance their interactive Jordan Brand experience.

In addition to this innovative user experience, the ability to quickly develop the Social Mosaic and host it in the cloud was of paramount importance to the Jordan Brand team, so they turned to the Windows Azure platform.”

You will have to check the site here to experience this Mosaic magic !

Allan Li from http://nxmix.com/ has created a project codename Mooncake, which can pull photos from flickr or other sites and creates Deep Zoom tile sets from it. (Thanks to Felix Wang for correcting me)

After following the simple steps, it generates code which can be embed in ones blog or sites to display the Deep Zoom tile sets. You can try it at  http://mooncake.nxmix.com/

Its still in beta. You can also signup for the same at http://beta.redmooncake.net/

Here are the steps screenshots:

Enter the flickr name, it has support for SmugMug also,

mooncake1z

So it will display all the photos from that flickr stream, you choose which one to include and press ‘Next’

mooncake2az

It will generate Deep Zoom photos……..

mooncake4z

…and provides the code which can be used to embed it in blog as I have done it here. It provides different effects for the photos. Here I have just shown some birds photos, one can try with some high resolution photos to see the full impact of Deep Zoom.

DeepZoom Obama

Check out this Masterpiece from Donovan West, at http://www.deepzoomobama.com/

This gigapixel (10000x10000) mosaic image was created from over 12,000 thumbnails uploaded by Obama supporters on www.BarackObama.com. It uses Deep Zoom, a cool new technology from Microsoft in Silverlight. To see Deep Zoom really shine, zoom in on Obama's left eye where you will see a thumbnail of Obama waving. Now zoom deep into that 3000x2200 pixel image. Notice the almost magical speed in which the high resolution images are displayed. Well done Donovan.

UPDATE : You want to put that on our blog or website ? Just put the following code,You can change the height and width according to your needs.Works best with Silverlight2 Beta2.

<iframe frameborder='0' scrolling='no'
style='border:solid 1px #999999; width:480px; height:480px'
