We have been hearing about the next version of Windows 8 release after Developer Preview (DP) to be called as Consumer Preview (CP) and this might be released soon in this month only. So the beta will be called as Consumer Preview and its almost confirmed with today’s teaser of a special Bing Home page video!

A special Bing Homepage under preparation is providing some pointers on this (HT to The Verge & LiveSide)

win8bettafishz

It mentions ‘Consumer Preview’ at 2 places. One in one of the Hotspots and other at bottom ‘See What’s new – Windows 8 Consumer Preview’ . But as of now none of the links work.

Just visit http://www.bing.com/?win8start=1 to have a look at the Windows 8 Consumer Preview Special Bing Home Page. And see how the Betta fish comes alive & swims across the screen. If you remember, similar betta fish used to be on the Windows 7 beta ver also.

Microsoft launches ‘Putting People First’ ads as users are concerned about Google’s Privacy Policy changes!

Microsoft is placing a series of ads in major newspapers offering the award winning alternatives to Google’s various services. As with the recent announcement of Google regarding Major changes to its soon to be implemented Privacy Policy, many of its users are feeling frustrated, concerned as Google is making some unpopular changes.

The changes Google announced make it harder, not easier, for people to stay in control of their own information. We take a different approach – we work to keep you safe and secure online, to give you control over your data, and to offer you the choice of saving your information on your hard drive, in the cloud, or on both.

And thus Microsoft is reminding the people about its award winning alternatives -

  • Hotmail: Join the hundreds of millions of people who enjoy not worrying about the content of their private e-mails being used to serve ads.
  • Bing: The search engine that gives you great experiences using the whole Web.
  • Office 365: The award-winning online collaboration solution for businesses who don’t want their documents and mail used to benefit advertisers.
  • Internet Explorer: The world’s most popular browser, now with Tracking Protection, offering controls over your privacy as you browse.

And to remind people, Microsoft is putting ads in the newspaper as below -

Search with voice, audio and vision with Bing on Mango!

Check out what Bing team has done with Bing on the new Windows Mango Phone !

Bing on Windows Phone now transcends the search box. No longer limited by text, you can now search with voice, audio and vision -

  • Voice: Search without typing using the voice search functionality.
  • Music Search: Find what song is playing by letting you phone "listen" to the music. It not only shows you the name, artist, and album, but even shows you where you can hear or buy it.
  • Bing Vision: You can now use your phone’s camera to look up product information by bringing an object into view. Bing will recognize text and present the option to select words for a search, and instantly return product results if the object has a barcode. Bing Vision can also detect product information from UPC codes, QR Codes and MS Tag as well as cover art for books, CD’s, DVD’s and video games.

Some more features -

Bing Local Scout provides local search results and recommends nearby restaurants, shopping and other activities in an easy to use guide powered by Bing. The results are arranged by:

  • Highlights: Top rated and highly reviewed listings
  • Eat+Drink: Nearby restaurants
  • See+Do: Nearby attractions and activities
  • Shop: Nearby stores

Bing search results now return Windows Phone Marketplace apps that are relevant to what you’re searching for.

For an in depth look at how this works, check out Ben and Stefan’s video covering Bing on Windows Phone 7.5:

Facebook launches Translation tool for inline translation using Bing Translator

Just came across this.-

Today we launched a new translation tool that enables people to translate posts directly inline on Facebook Pages through Bing Translate. With this service, we are making it even easier for people to enjoy Page content on Facebook regardless of the languages that they know.

When someone clicks on the translate button on a public Page post, a Bing translation will appear in a popout window. People... then have the opportunity to submit their own translation by opting-in to using inline translations. After their generated translation has received enough positive votes, it will replace the Bing translation and will appear each time someone clicks on the translate button associated with the post.

Page admins can always control how their content is translated within the "Your Settings" tab in the Edit Page view.

Yet to try it out though.

Check it out here.

The first Bing Image of the Day !

Do you know which was the first Bing image of the day ? This interesting Tuesday Trivia tweet from Microsoft answers this.

first bing

The first Bing Picture of the Day was a hiker standing in Polychrome Pass overlooking the Alaska Range Denali National Park.

Many of us thought the answer was "Marines standing in formation at Arlington National Cemetery." While this was used for the first public demonstration of Bing, it was not the photo used when Bing launched on June 3, 2009. The hiker was the first.

Look for stunning images daily on Bing  and learn about it from its hotspots.
