Microsoft wishes 8-bit day with an Easter egg

13th Sep is celebrated as 8-bit day which this year marks the 30 years of Super Mario Bros. Microsoft too celebrated and wished Happy 8-bit day with a nice Easter egg.

Here are the details how to crack this Easter egg:

↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A

that is up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right , b,a  (this is the Konami code which was the famous cheat code appearing in many Konami video games) I think it works only on US version, so use the above link only.

  • and you can see a pixelated version of Ninja Cat riding a T-rex across the screen at bottom and it will be dropping coins.

8bit01

8bit02

  • And you’ll also see pixelated  ‘Insert coin to play’ . Just drag one of the coin to the slot and the user will be greeted with a message from Microsoft ‘Microsoft.com wishes you a Happy 8-bit day!’

8bit03

Its very nice Easter egg, give it a try. This Ninja Cat has become very popular after Microsoft started using this as a sticker. Recently similar T-Rex GIF animation Easter egg was seen in Skype too.

EDIT: Microsoft sent invites to its Windows 10 devices event which had some binary codes on the image. On cracking this, Microsoft links to a webpage with a new ninja cat wallpaper  http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/windows10devices/

Go to the above link to get the full sized wallpaper.

Fly your AR.Drone 2.0 with Windows Store App

Recently I came across this post on flying AR.Drone 2.0 using Windows Store App. Those who are into coding can check for more details at the source.

drone02

The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 is an awesome device packed with cool features. The drone contains two cameras, one pointed forward that streams live video, and one pointed downwards (for all your surveillance needs). Its got four powerful engines that make it fast and maneuverable. The drone’s firmware keeps it stable and level while stationary or performing maneuvers, handling a huge burden for the user. It’s a fun device to write code for, and even more fun to pilot when you’re done!

There are few projects that have created AR.Drone APIs that can be used for Windows 8 Desktop Apps. While in this post it shows how to fly the Drone using Windows Store App as the author Peter Dwersteg has built his own API compatible with WinRT.

Check out the Source- Channel 9 for the demo video and for more details. For any query on this, please contact the authors - Clint Rutkas, Peter Dwersteg

Spot the International Space Station from your Home

As you know NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) is an orbiting Laboratory that combines the scientific and engineering talent of 16 nations to maintain the largest human outpost in Space. Its is the largest object built outside the planet Earth.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a unique spacecraft in low-Earth orbit. It is the largest and longest inhabited object ever to orbit the Earth. There has been uninterrupted human presence on the space station since 2000. The ISS is an amazing feat of technology that allows humans to explore, live in, and perform science in space.

The present ISS crew is commanded by Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams.

Did you know you can see the International Space Station from your house with your bare eyes? As the third brightest object in the sky, after the sun and moon, the space station is easy to see if you know where and when to look for it.

To celebrate the 12th anniversary of crews living and working aboard the station, its starting a new service-NASA’s Spot the Station service. This service sends you an email or text message a few hours before the space station passes over your house. The space station looks like a fast-moving plane in the sky, though one with people living and working aboard it more than 200 miles above the ground. It is best viewed on clear nights.

Sign up for the alerts at http://spotthestation.nasa.gov/

Spot the Station is available worldwide to anyone with an email account or SMS-enabled phone. Several times a week, Mission Control at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX, determines sighting opportunities for 4,600 locations worldwide. If your specific city or town isn’t listed, pick one that is fairly close to you. The space station is visible for a long distance around each of the listed locations.

This service will only notify you of “good” sighting opportunities - that is, sightings that are high enough in the sky (40 degrees or more) and last long enough to give you the best view of the orbiting laboratory.

Also, do you know Windows 8 Store has a some NASA related Apps too, here’s a screenshot of one of them-

Visualization of 11/11/11 data on Twitter

Last Friday, it was November 11, 2011, 11/11/11 and many of us on twitter had tweeted this rare date occurrence mentioning in some way or the other.

“This clip is a visualization of all the Tweets mentioning 11:11 on 11.11.11. Each “1” is a location that moves with the conversation on Twitter. Their scale varies depending on the volume of Tweets posted from the location they represent. You can see the main wave move from right to left, and then a second one that occurred at 11 p.m. around the world.”

At 11:11:11 on 11/11/11 I too had tweeted about it with a pic.

The first Bing Image of the Day !

Do you know which was the first Bing image of the day ? This interesting Tuesday Trivia tweet from Microsoft answers this.

first bing

The first Bing Picture of the Day was a hiker standing in Polychrome Pass overlooking the Alaska Range Denali National Park.

Many of us thought the answer was "Marines standing in formation at Arlington National Cemetery." While this was used for the first public demonstration of Bing, it was not the photo used when Bing launched on June 3, 2009. The hiker was the first.

Look for stunning images daily on Bing  and learn about it from its hotspots.
