Bi-hourly Shutdowns for the Windows 7 Beta – Date Clarification

There was lot of confusion on when the Bi-hourly shutdown of Windows 7 Beta will begin. As it was announced earlier that it will begin on July 1st, 2009 and Windows 7 beta will Expire on August 1st, 2009. But recently many received an e-mail from Microsoft which reminded users of Windows 7 Beta to move to a “non-expired” copy of Windows such as the Windows 7 RC or Vista as bi-hourly shutdowns will begin June 1st, 2009 for Windows 7 Beta.

So, this bi-hourly shutdown date started all the confusion, whether its June 09 or July 09?

Now Microsoft has clarified this: Bi-hourly shutdowns for the Windows 7 Beta will begin July 1st, 2009

“We apologize for the confusion and inconvenience this may have caused.”

So the date in the mail sent was wrong. No confusions now, Bi-hourly shutdowns for the Windows 7 Beta will begin July 1st, 2009 . So if you are still on Windows 7 Beta , get Windows 7 RC now from here.

Also this Bi-hourly shutdown date is only for beta , not applicable to RC. To be more clear: Beta expires on August 1, 2009, and bi-hourly shutdowns will begin July 1, 2009. The RC will expire June 1, 2010, and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, 2010”

How to log into Multiple Hotmail accounts at the same time?

Many a times you wanted to have your 2 Hotmail accounts window opened at the same time in your browser but you can’t as it would not allow you to do so. You had to logout of one and again sign-in to other. But now with Internet Explorer 8, its possible.

After signing into one Hotmail account, Just click the New Session option on the File menu, and a new browser window will open, and this will not share cookies with the original browser window. So now you can sign-in to other Hotmail (and most other Web applications such as Twitter etc.)  as a different user. This is applicable not only to Hotmail but any Webmail.

2LiveacIE8-1z

If you don’t see your Menu bar in IE8, you can right click on empty space near the tab and tick Menu Bar. Else you can use the keyboard shortcut, Alt+F, I, Enter to invoke a new session.

2LiveacIE8z

Here you can see, I have signed into my 2 different Webmail accounts at the same time.

For more Technical details regarding this option in IE8 check IEBlog. If you have not installed IE8 yet, get it from here.

Windows 7 FAQs

Check out the Windows 7 RC FAQs which has answers to all of your questions you wanted to know, questions such as:

What is Windows 7 Release Candidate?

Are there risks to installing the RC?

When Will  RC Expire?

Can I upgrade directly from the Windows 7 Beta to the RC?

Can I upgrade directly from Windows Vista to the RC?

Can I upgrade directly from Windows XP to the RC?

Why isn't there a Hindi or Arabic version of the RC?

What happened to the "Send Feedback" feature?

……………….And many many more:

Check out the FAQ at :  Windows 7 Release Candidate: FAQ

Windows 7 RC – Minimum system requirements

Now that Windows 7 RC is available for all to download, check this what you need :

    • Internet access (to download Windows 7 RC and get updates)

    • A PC with these system requirements:

      • 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

      • 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

      • 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)

      • DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Please note these specifications could change. And, some product features of Windows 7, such as the ability to watch and record live TV or navigation through the use of "touch," may require advanced or additional hardware.

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx

As I have been using it since its beta and also running the RC since few days now, I can tell you Windows 7 RC runs smoothly even with  512MB RAM  (32-bit), and it can also be installed on a 8GB HD. As after installation it occupies nearly 6.5GB (32-bit). So once installed, for running and installing other Apps, it will require more space. So even if you have a lesser System, you can give it a try. Of course, if you meet the specified System requirements, then you can enjoy all the cool features of Windows 7.

Windows 7 RC released for all

So the wait is finally over, as said earlier Windows 7 RC is released today- May 5th for all to download and experience it. You can get it from -

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx

Or

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dd353205.aspx?ITPID=mscomsc

Here’s what you should know about RC- straight from the Official site:

This is pre-release software, so please read the following to get an idea of the risks and key things you need to know before you try the RC.

  • You don't need to rush to get the RC. The RC will be available at least through July 2009 and we're not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time.

  • Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You’ll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use. (Learn more about installing Windows.)

  • Protect your PC and data. Be sure to back up your data and please don't test the RC on your primary home or business PC.

  • Tech details/updates: Before installing the RC, please read the Release Notes and Things to Know for important information about the release.

  • Keep up with the news. You can keep up with general technical information and news by following the team blog. And, you can get non-technical news, tips, and offers by subscribing to the monthly Exploring Windows newsletter.

  • Keep your PC updated: Be sure to turn on automatic updates in Windows Update in case we publish updates for the RC.

  • Installation: You can install the Windows 7 RC on a PC running Windows Vista without backing up the PC—but we encourage you to make a backup for safe keeping. If you’re running Windows XP or the Windows 7 Beta, you’ll need to backup your data, then do a clean installation of the RC, then reinstall your applications and restore your data. If you need to do a backup, please see How to back up your PC for more details and a suggestion for how to backup a PC running Windows 7 Beta or Windows Vista.

  • To install and use the RC, you'll need to know how to:

    • Troubleshoot problems. You're pretty much flying solo, so you'll need to handle your own tech support, and rely on other RC testers for their know-how

    • Burn an ISO file to make an installation DVD

    • Install Windows

    • Backup and restore your PC

    • Set up a network

    • Create and use a system recovery disk

So go the site and get it - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx

Thanks EdBott for the heads-up.

Windows 7 ISO image tips

win7logo Windows 7 RC will be available for download for General Public on 5th May. And is already available now for MSDN, TechNet Subscribers and on Microsoft Connect for Testers. Many are eagerly waiting for downloading the Windows 7 Image. So after the download you will just rush to burn the downloaded ISO image. My small tip will be handy while doing the same. First of all after downloading just check the MD5 or CRC32 checksum whichever is provided to make sure that the image you have downloaded is not corrupted during the download process.

So after that while burning , make sure you burn it at slow speeds. And sometimes even after burning them at slow speeds, you will get some Error at the beginning of install process or while installing, mainly during the ‘Expanding Windows Files…’  step.

So to avoid such error, make sure while burning to check the option of ‘verify data on disc after burning’ in the burning software. It will take a couple of minutes more to verify but its worth. As I had faced problem during Win7 beta ISO burning. I had burnt it at slow speed and I got the message, Burning has been successfully completed, but still during the Install process I got the error. So make sure you verify data on disc after burning.

So just keep these points in mind while burning any big images.

I have already downloaded and Installed Windows 7 RC from Microsoft Connect and my experience till now with RC is Superb. Thanks, Windows 7 Team !
