Silverlight based Seesmic social networking platform for Windows Phone 7, Windows and Mac demo

At the MIX10 Keynote, Loic the founder of Seesmic gave a cool demo of the cross platform capabilities of Silverlight based Seesmic Social Networking platform. He demos Seesmic Desktop based on Silverlight which runs entirely on plugins. Main social network services like twitter, facebook, linkedin were running as plugins on that platform. Further he demos how bingmaps was integrated in the tweet timeline itself.

First it was built for Windows and they were so impressed with Silverlight 4 that they ported it for Mac. And it was easy as the code was reused.

Next he demos the First Real twitter Client on Windows Phone 7 Series – Seesmic for Windows Phone . And the majority of the code was same as that for the desktop.

Check out this cool video of the same -

IE9 Vs Chrome, Firefox demo by Sinofsky and Dean

Internet Explorer9 Platform Preview for developers was announced and released during the MIX10 by Dean Hachamovitch. He talked about how IE9 was planned from the ground up to enable professional grade HTML5 on hardware. How HTML5 needs great script performance, standards. HTML5 apps will be graphically rich so making it GPU powered. HTML5 apps will be more like real apps rather than web pages. HTML5 applications will push the limits of graphical richness and interactivity. IE9 will run HTML5 applications better by taking advantage of PC Hardware though Windows. This is called GPU powered HTML5.

And this very cool feature GPU powered HTML 5 was also the part of the session and was demoed by Dean and Steven Sinofsky. They showed various tests , demos comparing IE9 against other browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox.

This video is a part of the day2 Keynote Session at MIX10.

You can also try running these tests on various browsers from http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/

Download the IE9 Platform Preview and the various demos, tests links are also given.

You can download it from Internet Explorer Platform Preview . Remember Platform Preview for developers is a light-weight frame around the core IE platform. And it installs side by side with IE8.

IE9pr2z

“The Platform Preview is not a replacement for your daily browser; for example, the Preview does not have an address bar, a back button, anti-phishing or malware protection. The Platform Preview does include debugging and diagnostics tools for developers. It also includes a way to provide feedback. The top level menus include Report Issue.”

Bing homepage image will go dark today

bing60

Lights at Bing Homepage will go off on 27th in honor of Earth Hour. The bing blog said -

“On Saturday, March 27th from 8:30pm to 9:30pm local time, the World Wildlife Fund invites you to join people from 3,100 cities in 121 countries on all 7 continents in participating in Earth Hour, where people across the world can demonstrate their concern about global climate change with the simplest of gestures: turning off all non-essential lights and electronics.

While a darker version of our page doesn’t save any energy over the regular version, we wanted to do our part to help spread the word. So in honor of Earth Hour, the Bing homepage image will go dark at 8:30pm Eastern Daylight Time and stay dark until 9:30pm Pacific Daylight Time.”

To find out more about what you can do to support Earth Hour, see http://www.myearthhour.org/community.

No need to hide iPhones…..just shake it !

Some days ago there were talks on the net about Microsoft Employees hiding their iPhones when some senior executives are within their sight. Don’t know how authentic were these as there’s no ban on using Apple products by Microsofties. Apple Macs are common with the Microsoft group that makes Mac version of Office. Also Microsoft has released Bing App for iPhone and earlier Seadragon for iPhone was released. And Microsoft also released its first app Tag Reader for Google based Android.

Anyway, check out this fun video- what to do with your iPhones to turn them to Windows Phone… Just Shake it!

(This video excerpt is taken from Channel9 video: Pete at MIX10: Your Favorite Things at MIX )

Leaving aside all this fun stuff, looking at various demos of Windows Phone 7 Series devices, the iPhones and others are already looking outdated.I’m sure Windows Phone 7 Series will bring a complete change to how we use mobile. People will talk about the Start button of Windows Phone as they now talk and are familiar with the Start button of Windows OS. The UI is great, beautiful, natural , easy to use. Once it arrives , Windows Phone 7 will be the preferred choice !!

Reading Comics in Windows Phone 7 with Graphic.ly using DeepZoom

Everyone likes reading Comic books. How about reading them on the move on your Windows Phone 7?

WPcomics1

Silverlight on Windows Phone also supports DeepZoom thus enabling great navigation and content viewing experiences. It delivers a high res imagery on low bandwidth. It starts with low res and scales in and as user starts panning and zooming in and out, it pulls down the right res. This is very important for phone devices.

At MIX10 Scott Guthrie’s Keynote, Mike Swanson demos Graphic.ly which provides Hi-fidelity Comics reading experience using DeepZoom on Windows Phone.

And there’s some behind the scene info about Mike delivering this session. Actually this session was to be done by Ben Riga but unfortunately, when he was on stage practicing the day before the keynote, he tripped and fell and broke his nose. So at the last minute, Mike Swanson had to step in and did this session.

Check out this Marvel Comics DeepZoom demo on Windows Phone and enjoy !

This session is a part of MIX10 Keynote by Scott Guthrie.

Office Talk – twitter like micro-blogging for workplace from Microsoft

OTLogo

The Microsoft Office Labs team has just launched a new experimental tool that brings Twitter-like microblogging to the workplace. Called OfficeTalk, this concept test application lets employees post their thoughts, activities and other info which is shared with anyone and everyone in their company.

Ever wish you could share information broadly within your organization without emailing everyone? Ever wish you could keep the pulse of what people in your organization think is interesting? Microblogging has that potential. OfficeTalk is a concept test to explore the value of microblogging in the enterprise. OfficeTalk is deployed internally at Microsoft and has seen over 10,000 visitors and hundreds of messages posted daily. We're now making OfficeTalk available to a few customers in a small pilot test. Because this is an early-stage concept, the OfficeTalk microblogging experience itself looks very similar to other well-known services. The key difference is that the enterprise owns the data since the OfficeTalk server is hosted in the customer’s organization.

officetalk2

officetalk3

OfficeTalk is in a limited private pilot for research purposes for now. If you'd like your firm to be involved in the pilot and are willing to participate in the user research, let us know. Since this is a research project, only a very small number of pilots will be considered.

Hardware Specs for Windows Phone 7 Series

WinPhonelogo

Consistent set of Hardware capabilities is now defined by Microsoft for the Windows Phone 7 devices. And Microsoft is very proactive in defining these hardware specifications unlike earlier for Windows Mobiles where it was flexible. It has set  kind of standards such as,  the front of the phone will have a multitouch display with 3 buttons generally positioned below the display, namely – Back, Start and Search. So I think the Start button of Windows Phones will be as famous as that of the Windows OS.

During the MIX10 , Joe Belfiore in this video Changing our Game – an Introduction to Windows Phone 7 Series  has shown the required hardware specifications for the Windows Phone 7 series devices.

Writerous: Plug-in to publish to Posterous from Windows Live Writer

wlwlogo Scott has come up with another useful Windows Live Writer plug-in. This time its for Posterous users. Now you can publish to Posterous from Writer itself using Writerous plug-in. This has been made available on CodePlex.

How to use -

Adding Posterous to Live Writer
Because Live Writer doesn't natively support Posterous, there's a little bit of trickery involved. The whole basis of this plug-in relies on you having at least one other blog configured within Live Writer. All you do is add that blog to Live Writer again (in essence, copying it), and just call it Posterous.

Configuring Writerous

First of all, you need to set your username and password, and the Posterous site you will be publishing to.
To access these, go to Tools > Options > Plug-ins > Writerous > Options from within Live Writer.
